Nearly 50 Years of Experience
Family Owned and Operated

Delivering Education Through Fun

Our Story

Mary Campbell Preschool was built in 1975 by Michael & Mary Campbell when the Campbell family moved to Sydney and found nowhere they felt comfortable leaving their two youngest children. With the inspired idea to create their own preschool the "Mary Campbell Preschool Dream" was started, beginning with the hopes of two rooms for 3 to 5 year olds.

Since the beginning Mary Campbell has witnessed many changes to the preschool her husband built for her family, from the changing of the outdoor play structure to the addition of a new room and the adoption of new learning techniques and equipment, one thing however has never changed - the most important thing is the children. Mary's hope was to put the children first and to give them experiences and memories they will cherish forever.

Mary still lives upstairs and enjoys hearing about what the children are doing each day from both her daughters (Brigid & Marita) who now run the preschool, as well as stories of old children all grown up and coming back with their own.

Our Philosophy

Children Should Be Cherished

Cultural

Mary Campbell Preschool respectfully acknowledges the Bidjigal and Gadigal people, the Traditional Owners of the land in which our service operates. We further extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, staff, volunteers and community members that visit our preschool. We aim to incorporate their languages, stories, and all that their culture embodies, into our programs and daily routines in order to create a more inclusive and welcoming community. Our preschool believes in recognising and celebrating the diversity of our wider community and we enjoy incorporating different cultural celebrations, traditions and languages into our curriculum to reflect Australia's multicultural landscape. We achieve this through open communication with and assistance from families and community members which enables us to build the children's, their families and staff members sense of belonging.

Children

Our centre's philosophy is driven by the motto that 'Children Should Be Cherished'; we believe that their learning and development needs to be nurtured in a safe and warm environment to allow them to flourish and thrive. We recognise that each child is their own individual with differing needs, interests and skills. The diversity of the children is recognised throughout our program and practices to ensure that every child is continuously reaching new milestones whilst developing a strong sense of identity and confidence within themselves and a sense of connection to their community.

Community/Family

Mary Campbell Preschool is a family run business that has been a part of our community for 50 years. We believe that our longevity can be attributed to the 'homely' feel that has been created and nourished by 3 generations of the Campbell Family who have directed our service. We know that a child's first sense of belonging starts at home and families are core to a child's being and sense of identity. Without building strong partnerships and reciprocal relationships between family and preschool, a child cannot grow - that is why we put communication with primary caregivers at the core of everything we do. We value all of our families' input into our services' programs and daily routines as well as that of the wider community. We use local community services to further inform and enhance our programs. All of this enables us to provide quality care for all of our children.

Educators

Embedded into our daily practices all staff encourage each other’s talents and strengths in an supportive environment working together. The Educators take time to talk and plan as they work with the same team every day. Their vocation is based on trust and respect and how they connect with the children their families and the community. The dedication and professionalism of staff members is enduring with the longevity and commitment with staff members staying at Mary Campbell Pre School for many years (Code of Ethics 2016 Early Childhood Australia).

Staff

Our experienced staff come with many different lived experiences that helps to mould the way in which we care for and educate the children. Through their diverse knowledge from teaching in various educational settings around the world, to their own personal beliefs, philosophies and cultural backgrounds, strong relationships are built between the educators and children, their families and the wider community. Educators acknowledge that our profession is constantly changing and growing, with new ideas and practices emerging and we are passionate about ensuring that we participate in courses and other professional development workshops to further enhance our skills and knowledge and implement best quality education.

Environment

All indoor and outdoor environments are set up with the interests and developmental skills of the children in mind. Educators plan and implement learning environments in collaboration with the children, families and the community. Staff reflect on what works best and what may need adjusting from the configuration of physical spaces to resources and materials being used. Our garden upstairs is a popular space where the children have been working alongside educators to care for and nurture our various plants, flowers and fruits. We utilise the natural resources by bringing them into our craft and learning spaces as well as cooking experiences believing that this helps children to learn the role that they can play in protecting and caring for the natural world around them.

Curriculum and Program

Our program is developed in conjunction with children, families and the wider community using the Early Years Learning Framework as a guide to ensure that all children are provided with the best opportunities to reach their potential and achieve their individual developmental goals. Again, the program is inspired by the children's interests, home experiences, participation in community and cultural events and family input, whilst also using observations of the children in the classroom

setting. We aim to conduct meaningful and engaging experiences that are beneficial to all aspects of a child's development which are implemented through craft, music, group times, physical activities, gardening, cooking and much more. External parties such as family members, theatrical performers and representatives from community/council run programs are invited into the preschool to lead activities with the children. Our educational program is reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure that the children's needs continue to be met and their developing interests and abilities are being taken into consideration. It is also a time for educators to reflect on their practice, providing an opportunity to review program successes and discuss, as a team, what might need changing moving forward in order to assist the children in developing a positive disposition towards learning.

Developed in consultation with staff, families and children, with direct reference to the Early Years Learning Framework and Code of Ethics Early Childhood Australia.

Learning Programs

Boy Holding Duck.jpeg

Hatch & Grow

Hatch & Grow is an annual that occurs around easter, we get 10 unhatched duck eggs from a farm who is connected to the 'Hatch & Grow' program and we keep and learn from them for two weeks.

Over the first three days the children watch as the ducks crack free of their eggs and hatch in their special heating chamber.

The rest of the weeks are spent discussing with the children about how fast the ducks grow, what they should be named, and what will happen once they leave.

They love learning how to hold a duck and the feeling of their soft feathers.

All of the children love watching the little ducks grow so much over the nights and the weekend.

And they love watching them come back every year!

Culturally Inclusive Learning

Warami (Dharug), Kia Ora (Maori), Gia Sou (Greece), Halo (Indonesia), Hej! (Sweden), Dia Duit (Ireland), Olá (Portugal), Ciao (Italy), ZDRAHST-vooy-tyeh (Russia), Hola (Argentina), Ni Hao (Mandarin), Salaam Alaikum (Afganistan) and Hello (English)

With our ever growing connections we at Mary Campbell Preschool believe in widening our children's worlds with learning about some of the other countries members of our staff and community are from.

In recognition of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members we imbed an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective into our teaching practices. We also start every day, in every class by saying the "Acknowledgment to country" with all of the children.

We work on connecting with members of the community such as Ryka Ali who comes is each year to teach us all about some songs, dances, and stories of his land. And we have developed a Reconciliation action plan that is currently being published through the “Narragunnawali Reconciliation in action.”

With the help of some of our friends we have been able to learn first hand about what its like to live in new and exciting places like Sweden or Indonesia.

Every year at Greek Easter some of our Yaya's (Greek grandmothers) come and help us all cook some Koulourakia (Greek easter biscuits) and teach us a little about some Greek Easter traditions such as the egg painting.

As well as incorporating other cultures such as Portuguese with the help of our staff member Fatima, Irish assisted by our lovely Sinead, and a Chinese New Year celebration every year, we are always working to incorporate more of our world in our learning.

Wildlife Man

Every year we have a 'WildLife Man' come and show off some of his exciting animals!

Bringing many animals such as green tree frogs, short neck turtles, lizards and even a snake to bring out the wild in all of us.

Everyone watches with amazement and has the opportunity to get up close and personal.

With new found confidence and some interesting animal friends we look forward to our 'Wild Life Man' coming back again in the many years to come.

Growing Our Garden

Here at Mary Campbell Preschool we believe in getting down and dirty when it comes to our gardens.

With one large garden upstairs growing tomato's, cucumbers, passionfruit and many other fruits and vegetables we try and supply for both our own staff and kids morning tea's.

Downstairs we have many pots and tires full of beautiful green plants and colourful flowers which, with the help of our main gardener Jill and all the kids, we are always continuing to grow.

Community Involvement & Learning From Our Parents

All of our parents are from all works of life, working in different and amazing jobs, and we love to show them at preschool.

We have had some amazing parents with super cool jobs have the time to come in and show off what they do! From ambulance drivers who have brought in their trucks to show, to crane operators who let us all have a sit in the front seat, we've even had footy players come in and teach us some football skills that we love to learn!

Every year brings new parents with new vocations that the kids are always excited to learn from.

Our Local Community

Maroubra is our local community, and we believe in supporting the local people and learning about where we live

All food items not home grown are locally bought to support our local shops and growers. As well as using small, local companies for the incursions at the preschool, we believe in supporting those who are willing to try and succeed in a world of big businesses. We also take pride in teaching the kids about the local ecosystem with emphasis on the native wildlife and the world famous Maroubra Beach. In consolidation with our local Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander community we teach the children about the totem animal of their tribe - Guriwal The Whale. The whale was celebrated across Sydney by all those tribes on the sea side.
